Chinwag does not ask the device user to declare “I’m 18”. It asks who is playing. Choose Continue with Family Mode whenever anyone in the group is under 18. Family Mode does not create an account, child profile or birthday record.
How to turn Family Mode on
- Open Chinwag and choose Continue with Family Mode.
- You can also turn on Family Mode later from Settings.
- Choose New Friends or the dedicated Family deck and start a round.
The setting is remembered on that iPhone. If Apple’s private age range applies Family Mode automatically, it cannot be switched off for that session.
What the switch actually changes
Family Mode shows only the New Friends and Family decks. It prevents every adult-oriented pack from entering a round, even if one was selected before the setting changed.
- No Spicy, Date Night, alcohol, dating or adult-party questions.
- No prompts built around humiliation, secrets or private disclosure.
- No child profiles, birthdays, personal answers or online rooms.
- Both reviewed decks are available without a purchase while Family Mode is on.
Questions that work across generations
The 80-question Family deck uses simple language and answers that can work for a teenager, parent or grandparent. It mixes quick votes, playful choices, harmless opinions and story prompts.

Good hosting needs more than a filter
A software setting cannot understand every family. The person holding the phone should still read the room, move on quickly when a prompt lands badly and avoid turning a playful question into a demand for disclosure.
Give people three easy exits
Say “pass”, ask for another card or simply hand the phone on. Nobody needs to justify the choice, and the host should not turn the pass into a joke.
What Apple shares
On supported devices, Apple may privately share an age range. Chinwag uses only the under-18 or adult routing result, never receives a birthday, and does not store the range bounds. Family Mode does not replace appropriate supervision.
